Description
Three metal rings serve as a homage to the 3 Route 66 alignments.
Located along Nameoki Road at the Pontoon Road overpass, this commemorative Route 66 art installation pays tribute to the Mother Road’s legacy. The three interwoven colored rings represent the town's three historic Route 66 alignments. It is constructed from steel to honor Granite City’s rich steel manufacturing roots.
Celebrated as a landmark public art piece, this Granite City Route 66 art installation stands as a tribute to America’s most historic highway. The installation features a large, custom Granite City Route 66 shield nestled inside three massive, interlocking colored metal rings. These rings intentionally symbolize the three distinct historic alignments of Route 66 that passed through the community from 1926-1954. Crafted locally by the Arnette Pattern Company, the heavy steel composition serves as a direct nod to the area's deeply embedded industrial and steel-manufacturing heritage. Spurred by a collaboration between the City, Great Rivers & Routes, and Enjoy Illinois, it functions as a popular modern photo opportunity for road trippers exploring the Mother Road and a symbol for the community to embrace its unique distinction of having three separate alignments of the historic road before the interstate system diverted traffic from these routes.
